TALKING ABOUT AT-RISK DRINKING WITH OLDER ADULTS AGING WITH HIV

Abstract Older adults living with HIV (OALWH) may have health conditions that amplify the negative effects of alcohol use. Traditional screening tools do not consider comorbidities or age. We adapted Comorbidity Alcohol Risk Evaluation Tool tool for at-risk drinking to reflect HIV-related and medications. tested a brief intervention Black OALWH collected usability data. Participants, n=27, 53.2 average age in years, 21 years HIV. Three themes: (1) Expectations doctors (“Doctors better ask me questions about my use...”); (2) It’s how you say it (“[Doctors] talk down like I don’t know freaking disease …”); (3) Effects surviving (“I am fully aware alcohol…. I’m probably informed than most people…”). identified strategies address OALWH.
